Nook Industries is calling it “the future of position control.” Indeed, with its aluminum exterior and means of contracting into small sizes, the Nook Sensor System (NSS) has all the makings of a modern mechanical marvel. But the feature that really sets this gadget apart from copycats is its patented design, which allows users to install and adjust an unlimited amount of sensors on a single screw jack and integrate those sensors to various motion control systems. Executives with the Cleveland, Ohio-based company claim the NSS helps control screw jack systems in ways that never before have been possible. With a repeatability of up to 0.1 millimeters, the NSS is designed specifically for the ActionJac. The device features a custom aluminum stem cover that provides a housing shroud for certain position and travel limit sensors that are mounted with custom profiles and used to detect ring magnets attached to the translating screw. The sensors operate through an electronic magnetic circuit that has been developed and patented by Nook. The sensors on the NSS are made using a polypropylene over-molding technology, which enables them to be completely sealed into small sizes. Configurations with Nook’s ActionJac are limited only by the stem’s cover length, according to the company.
