Editorial Guidelines

Here are some pointers to consider when formulating an article for Medical Product Outsourcing or Orthopedic Design & Technology:
  • Ensure article content is relevant to the world of medical device manufacturing or orthopedic technology—regulatory issues, quality solutions, software, financial/business viewpoint, best practices, design and/or R&D, product development, outsourcing solutions, operational efficiencies, supply chain issues, etc. We’re open to suggestions. Technical white papers also are welcome (provided they’re not an advertisement for your company). White papers should detail a technical issue, but not specifically tout a product or service. Descriptions of partnerships in product developments (i.e., case history), for example, make great white paper fodder.

  • Self-promotion should always be avoided. If you work for a particular company, the only time your company’s name should appear in the article is in your byline and author bio at the end.

  • Things to avoid: The second easiest way to get your manuscript sent back for revisions (or removed from consideration) is to use cliché phrases and overtly PR-ish writing.

  • Ensure you have something substantive to add to the ongoing conversation about medical device manufacturing, orthopedics, design and product development, and/or outsourcing. We are looking for well-thought-out, even-handed writing and research.

  • Word Count (including author bio; images affect total word count)
    • Print Feature Article: 2,300 to 3,000 words
    • Print Column: ~1,750 words
    • Online Contributions: 500 to 1,500 words

  • Byline and bio: The byline should include name, title, company; bio should present a brief professional bio of the author(s).

  • Clearances: It is the author’s responsibility to ensure articles submitted to Medical Product Outsourcing or Orthopedic Design & Technology have been cleared by all third parties. For example, if a paper was originally presented at a conference, it is the author’s responsibility to ensure the conference organizers have approved the paper’s publication in the magazine.

  • Editing: All accepted manuscripts are subject to copy editing.

  • Exclusivity: Manuscripts are reviewed with the understanding  they have not been published previously and are not under consideration for publication elsewhere.

  • Illustrations: Photographs, line drawings, and other illustrations may be in color or black and white and should be referred to in the text in sequence (e.g., Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.). Electronic images should be in one of the following formats: TIFF, JPEG, EPS. Photos for a print submission MUST be high resolution (i.e., 300 dpi and at least 3 inches in length or width).

  • Submissions: Send a Word document by e-mail to Sean Fenske at sfenske@rodmanmedia.com. Include author's information (as indicated above) and any graphics with an appropriate caption and image credit.
