Ametek Inc. demonstrates the tantalizing nature of compact electromechanical designs with its new G30A planetary gearboxes made for Pittman brand DC motors. Standard diameters range from 1.20 in. (30.5 mm.) for round versions to 1.5 in. (38 mm.) for square styles, while gearbox lengths measure anywhere from 1.33 in. (33.7 mm.) to 2.02 in. (51.2 mm.). Gearbox weight varies depending on the model, but generally falls somewhere between 3.9 oz. (110 gm.) and 6.6 oz. (186 gm.). According to the Kent, Ohio-based company, the gearboxes can attain 14 standard reduction ratios ranging from 4:1 to 1,296:1, which result in maximum output loads extending from 2.47 Nm. (350 oz.-in.) to 8.83 Nm. (1,250 oz.-in.), though custom gear ratios can be configured to meet almost any application need. Ametek claims the gearboxes are engineered specifically for challenging applications, incorporating sintered steel planet gears to promote high torque capacity and low noise. The products’ design also features single piece carrier plates with integral gear posts and sun gear that can be arranged as needed to achieve the desired reduction ratio, and a 416 stainless steel output shaft as well as a sintered metal output bearing to protect against corrosion.
