Optrex America Inc. has developed a touch switch technology that detects variations in position and command, eliminates air gaps and reduces the number of layers required, according to the Plymouth, Mich., firm. The capacitive touch screens respond to fingertip input control without pressure, and lifetimes are about 100 million touches, the design-er and manufacturer of flat panel displays said. Optrex's new touch switch technology provides less reflectivity and greater transparency and allows for a thinner touch screen (up to 0.5-0.7 millimeters thick in the viewing area), the company said. Display options incorporating the capacitive touch technology include 3-inch, 3.5-inch transmissive and 3.5-inch transflective types.
