Medtronic began a development partnership with photonic-based health monitoring and communications firm Rockley Photonics to bring Rockley’s Bioptx biomarker sensing platform into Medtronic’s solutions in various healthcare settings.
Rockley’s biosensing tech aims to expand wearable medtech device capabilities by miniaturizing biomarker measurement and analysis in a compact form factor. This could result in one wearable device to measure biomarkers including core body temperature, blood pressure, hydration, alcohol, lactate, and glucose trends, among others. Bioptix also integrates cloud analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) for a holistic assessment of many conditions.
Healthcare trends are shifting from reactive to proactive strategies, for example constant, real-time, non-invasive health monitoring to generate actionable data to guide personalized care.
“This partnership combines Medtronic’s exceptional strength in providing in-patient care with Rockley’s expertise in wearable, remote monitoring,” Rockley chairman and CEO Dr. Andrew Rickman told the press. “I believe that this collaboration will bring to life our vision of giving people better insights into their health and well-being. We are excited about the potential for this partnership to herald the next generation of wearable devices and deliver a complete lifecycle of patient care.”
