For the seventh time, Medica 2018 saw a live competition for the best app-based mobile medical solution for use in the daily routine of a patient, doctor, or in the hospital. The event was hosted in a session of the Medica Connected Healthcare Forum on Wednesday, November 14th.

From June 1st to September 30th, developers from all over the world submitted their app-based mobile medical solutions. These submissions were pre-selected by a Medica expert team and top-class jury:

    • Lea Dias, a health IT consultant and strategist and health robotics and industry analyst
    • Oliver Gassner, head of digital health intelligence EMEA at Bayer
    • Sebastien Gaudin, co-founder & CEO of The CareVoice
    • Ben Göllnitz, industry manager, healthcare for Google
    • Harsha Jagasia, chief operating officer of Startupbootcamp Digital Health
    • Moka Lantum, health delivery expert and managing partner at MicroClinic Technologies
    • Muthu Singaram, CEO of Incubator, Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC), Indien Institute of Technology (ITT)
    • Dr. Klaus Stöckemann, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Peppermint VenturePartners GmbH
    • Tjaša Zajc, digital health journalist and strategic healthcare partnerships and healthcare communications manager of Iryo

From left to right: Mark Wächter, moderator; judges: Ben Göllnitz; Muthu Singaram (jury captain); Tjaša Zajc; Harsha Jagasia; Dr. Klaus Stöckemann; Oliver Gassner; Lea Dias; and Moka Lantum.

The 10 developers whose app-based mobile solutions best matched the submission criteria based on the jury's point of view were qualified for the participation at the live Medica pitch.

The necessary submission and evaluation criteria during the pre-screening phase for submissions online were rigorous. The app must be available for use on smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) setups, or drones. It must be a B2B or B2B2C solution targeting patients, doctors, and hospital/medical teams. The app must have been live in a minimum of one market until the end of Q1 2019 and not launched earlier than Q1 2016. Founders of the applying startup must have some portion of ownership in the company, and not have raised over seven million Euro from combined funding sources.

All app-based mobile medical solutions nominated for the live event were notified in October. The pitches happened live on the Connected Healthcare Forum stage in Medica’s hall 15, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, followed by a get-together to celebrate the winners.

Each team had three minutes to pitch their app-based mobile medical solution. During their live presentation, each company was evaluated on their medical app’s functionality/intuitive UX and UI, level of innovation and originality, level of problem solving and improvement of current care standards, scalability and business model attractiveness, and the quality of documentation and team. Another two minutes were reserved for the jury to place questions. After all 10 presentations, the jury deliberated in the background.

(The ten finalists who competed can be found here.)

    In 3rd place: Veta Health
The Veta Health app offers real-time insight about health status and provides responsive care pathways that enable patients to manage their health conditions and understand their care protocols with ease. Digitally connecting patients to their personal care networks enables stronger support and better health management over the long term. The clinically-integrated platform supports value-driven care initiatives through a cloud-based platform that can be integrated into EHRs, a customizable care plan builder, protocol-based pathways that respond to patient input, and multi-channel (SMS, email, app, and web) engagement strategies.

Veta Health was awarded 500 Euros. The company will also be granted one hour of online mentoring by a member of the Bayer G4A digital health team, and one hour of Startupbootcamp (SBC) Online Mentor Office Hours.

     In 2nd place: Tonic App
Tonic App helps medical doctors to diagnose and treat their patients by curating for them, in smarter ways, the massively dispersed resources they need for their day-to-day work. It helps diagnose and treat patients by aggregating in a single app all the professional content and tools doctors need for day-to-day work. With Tonic App, clinicians can discuss clinical cases, use multiple calculators, search for clinical guidelines, find reimbursement codes, check drug conversion tables, share medical images, access diagnostics trees, and read healthcare news, among other useful tools.

Tonic App was awarded 1,000 Euros. The company will also be given dinner with one member of Bayer G4A digital health team and a dinner with an SBC Mentor in Berlin.

    In 1st place: FibriCheck
FibriCheck is a CE mark/FDA cleared smartphone application to detect different cardiac arrhythmias (including atrial fibrillation, or AFib) using a smartphone camera in combination with artificial intelligence. The software-based solution is the only one of its type that merely requires users to place a finger on the smartphone camera to measure cardiac rhythm. It then generates an actionable report that is automatically shared with a medical professional to receive a faster diagnosis. According to the company, preventing strokes was a major driver for the app's development, because one of five strokes can be directly attributed to AFib, and AFib-caused strokes are more debilitating and deadly than their regular counterparts.

FibriCheck was awarded 2,000 Euros. The company will also be provided up to 2 hours of business development support with Bayer experts and relevant decision makers, two  SXSW 2019 Interactive badge registrations, and an exclusive ticket to attend the SBC Masterclass in Berlin during the next SBC Health Program 2019.

Congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to next year's competition!
