The editorial team of Medical Product Outsourcing reached out to several companies who were exhibiting at Medica or Compamed in case you were unable to see them at the event or did not get to Germany this year. Review the following questions we served up to John Brennan, general manager, Ireland, at Spectrum Plastics Group and see if the company is a potential manufacturing partner for you.
MPO: What technology or service are you emphasizing at Medica this year?
John Brennan: At Spectrum Plastics Group, we are promoting our global capabilities. We provide development, engineering, and manufacturing solutions for a comprehensive range of engineered plastics components and assemblies for medical devices. Our capabilities include volume and specialty extruded tubing and molded components incorporating thermoplastics and silicone materials. In addition, we also provide contract design and manufacturing services for finished medical devices.
MPO: What’s the most common challenge customers inquire about and how do you address it?
Brennan: Customers are looking for a manufacturing partner to provide a fast turnaround on technically challenging products that give them a market advantage while maintaining compliance and keeping cost down. We can bring innovative solutions to the table, quickly and competitively, by engaging our internal partners to generate robust solutions to complex component requirements.
MPO: If you could give one piece of advice to companies seeking a manufacturing partner before they make a decision, what would it be?
Brennan: Seek out a partner with a broad range of capabilities and multiple global locations—one approved supplier on your AVL servicing all your locations with a range of products, technologies, and capabilities. This de-risks both the supply chain and regulatory compliance by leveraging the resources of the manufacturing partner who understands the landscape in the local geography.
MPO: What are the forces driving medical device manufacturers to seek your technology/services over doing it in-house?
Brennan: Having the broad spectrum of capabilities under one “roof” while utilizing the latest manufacturing and materials technology is a huge driver. Spectrum Plastics Group is constantly innovating and adding manufacturing technologies device manufacturers cannot justify the investment in. We can provide fast turnaround time—days for prototypes and just weeks for validations—due to the deep technical understanding we have of our core process technologies.
MPO: In what ways is your company able to aid in getting a product (project) to market faster?
Brennan: Spectrum Plastics Group’s core capabilities are focused on the key components of a medical device—tubing, molded components, and the assembly processes and techniques to transform these items into a finished product. We provide direct engineer to engineer support, vast knowledge of materials and manufacturing solutions, and in-depth knowledge of the regulatory path. This combined capability greatly reduces the time to market by having the vast majority of manufacturing capabilities within one organization with multiple global locations.
