Siemens Healthineers has gained U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for syngo Virtual Cockpit, a private, secure communication platform for healthcare professionals to visualize, acquire, and collaborate on images in real-time across multiple sites.
Using syngo, users can connect to Siemens Healthineers and other vendors’ CT, MRI, PET, single photon-emission CT (SPECT), PET/CT, SPECT/CT, and PET/MR scanners. The company touted it as the first multi-vendor, remote scanning software to obtain FDA clearance as a medical device.
Radiologic technologists can leverage live audio, video, and chat functionalities to conduct scans or offer support for up to three different remote scanners simultaneously. Siemens’ solution aspires to tackle the ongoing technologist shortage, standardize care, and achieve consistent diagnoses. Syngo can also be used for one-the-job staff training at remote facilities, the company said.
Further, Siemens Healthineers hopes the Virtual Cockpit can help patients who would otherwise require long distance travel for more complex scans.
“With this FDA clearance for syngo Virtual Cockpit, Siemens Healthineers proudly offers our customers the first and only multi-vendor, multi-modality, FDA-cleared solution for remote assistance scanning,” said Peter Shen, head of digital and automation at Siemens Healthineers North America. “This FDA clearance means that our customers can use syngo Virtual Cockpit for their remote scanning operations with even more confidence that they are using a proven solution—one that prioritizes patient safety and convenience while also addressing operational and staffing challenges.”
Earlier this month, the company’s Magnetom Skyra and Vida series 3T MRI scanners received FDA clearance to use InkSpace Imaging’s Small Body Array suite of MR coils.
