BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) has appointed Ronald (Ron) Silverman, MD, FACS, as its new executive VP and chief medical officer (CMO). He will take office on December 4.
Dr. Silverman will report to Beth McCombs, BD’s executive VP and chief technology officer. He will also become a member of the BD executive leadership team.
"Ron has been dedicated to advancing care for nearly 30 years, working across clinical practice, academic research and industry roles,” McCombs told the press. “Ron's broad expertise and passion for innovation, evidence generation, clinical development, real-world evidence, medical safety, and compliance will help BD build upon our exciting innovation pipeline and promote better outcomes for patients and providers by enabling increasingly efficient, effective and personalized care."
He replaces the retiring Dr. William Sigmund, who has been BD’s CMO since January 2018.
Dr. Silverman joins BD from 3M Health Care, where he had been the soon-to-be-spun-out company’s senior VP and CMO since 2021. Before that, he led medical and clinical affairs teams for multiple 3M business units: KCI Corporation, then Acelity, and the 3M Health Care Medical Solutions Division.
Before entering the industry, Dr. Silverman was chief of plastic surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He holds two patents, has authored over 80 journal publications, and contributed to several textbooks. Dr. Silverman also continues to hold academic appointments at both the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
