BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) has launched new needle-free blood draw technology that is compatible with integrated catheters as part of its vision for a “One-Stick Hospital Stay.”
The company said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k)-cleared PIVO Pro needle-free blood collection device has design improvements to achieve the first, only compatibility with integrated and long peripheral IV catheters. This includes the new Nexiva closed IV catheter system with NearPort IV access and expands on current PIVO compatibility with traditional short peripheral IV catheters available since 2017.
The new solution, BD said, includes longer dwell times and reduced catheter complications, with the ability to draw high-quality blood samples directly from the peripheral IV line with PIVO Pro. The solution helps alleviate fear and anxiety related to repetitive needlesticks.
"The latest innovation to our PIVO portfolio helps expand needle-free blood collection to even more patients and clinicians as we continue to redefine the standard of care through our 'One-Stick Hospital Stay' vision," Eric Borin, worldwide president of Medication Delivery Solutions at BD, told the press. "This new solution helps to reduce unnecessary and repeat needlesticks in the hospital while elevating clinical outcomes, improving workflow and creating a better experience for clinicians and patients."
BD also said the line draw solution has been demonstrated to help optimize IV performance, reduce sample errors that can cause redraws and delays in care, and reduce complications that lead to unnecessary procedures and IV replacements. Removing the needle from blood draws and reducing IV replacements may lower the risk of needlestick injury and blood exposure for clinicians while preserving patient vessel health.

BD’s "One-Stick Hospital Stay" vision has three pillars:
- Help reduce unnecessary needlesticks by choosing the right vascular access device and placing it successfully the first time.
- Use one IV line as a single access point for required therapies and blood draws.
- Optimal maintenance of the IV line to help reduce risk of complications so it doesn’t have to be replaced and lasts throughout the hospital stay.
