3M announced Bryan C. Hanson, CEO of orthopedic company Zimmer Biomet, has been appointed to lead the independent healthcare company that is to be spun off from 3M, as its new CEO.
Hanson will join 3M on September 1 as CEO of the Health Care Business Group. He has served as president and CEO of Zimmer Biomet since 2017, and chairman since 2021.

"His industry expertise, ability to drive growth, and track record of building a strong culture and teams will make an immediate impact."
3M’s Health Care Business group had $8.4 billion of sales in 2022. The company has wound care, oral care, health care IT, and biopharma filtration products.

Before Zimmer Biomet, Hanson was executive VP and president of Medtronic’s Minimally Invasive Therapies Group. Before Medtronic, he was in various executive roles at Covidien and was named group president of Covidien’s Medical Device business in 2013. In 2011, as Surgical Solutions group president, he transformed Covidien’s energy-based devices and surgical devices businesses into one global business unit.
Further executives were also appointed to the 3M healthcare spinoff, also Sept 1. Carrie Cox, Organon chairman and former Humacyte CEO, will be chairman of the board. 3M executive VP and chief financial and transformation officer Monish Patowalala will be promoted to 3M president and CFO.
Hanson has been replaced at Zimmer Biomet by chief operating officer Ivan Tornos, effective immediately.
