Intuitive has gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its da Vinci SP surgical system to perform simple prostatectomy as a representative procedure.
Simple prostatectomy is often used in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate. In this surgery, part of an enlarged prostate blocking the flow of urine is removed.
da Vinci SP was also cleared for a transvesical approach to simple and radical prostatectomy. Radical prostatectomy involves removal of the entire prostate gland, most often for those diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“The addition of simple prostatectomy and the transvesical approach to prostatectomy to the da Vinci SP clearances expands the existing urology indication for SP,” Intuitive’s chief medical officer Myriam Curet, MD told the press. “There is a growing body of clinical evidence on the use of the SP system, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to safely advance minimally invasive surgery.”
da Vinci SP is robotic-assisted technology that was designed for deep and narrow access into the body. It has the ability to enter the body through a single, small incision or through a natural orifice. It has three wristed instruments and a fully wristed, 3D, high-definition camera. The instruments and camera emerge through a single cannula and are properly triangulated around target anatomy at the distal tip.
The system allows flexible port placement and 360 degrees of anatomical access through the single SP arm. Surgeons control the fully articulating instruments and camera. SP has been cleared in the U.S. for urology and transoral otolaryngology procedures.
