To coincide with the opening of its medical educational event on hips and knees in Denmark, Smith & Nephew plc has launched Education and Evidence, a new e-learning platform for surgeons to access and share peer-to-peer educational resources. Supporting joint repair and replacement, extremities and trauma specialties, the member-based service already hosts more than 1,000 videos, articles, surgical techniques, podcasts, training courses, tablet PC apps and iBooks.
“Smith & Nephew has been supporting healthcare professionals for over 150 years,” said Michael Frazzette, president of Smith & Nephew’s advanced surgical devices division. “Today we proudly continue this tradition by giving our customers digital access to trusted, peer-to-peer educational resources at the most convenient time and on their device of choice.”
Education and Evidence uses a specialized search engine and self-profiling to tailor content to users, while also enabling the sharing of resources with colleagues. It includes links to the first two in a series of surgical technique guides, which are available through the iBooks Store for use on the Mac and iPad platforms. The site also hosts a new iPad and Android mobile app on ligament balancing, which features 22 videos and more than 60 screens of content.
“I find this level of commitment and creativity among our industry partners to be invaluable,” said Carsten Perka, M.D., deputy director of the center for musculoskeletal surgery and chairman of the orthopaedic department at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany. “Smith & Nephew sets the new standard today. Learning from my peers and sharing knowledge across these platforms will help me bring new ideas, new ways of working and treating patients, into my clinical practice. And as I publish my work on the website, others can learn from me.”
