Just three years after its opening, Consort Medical is shutting down its Sheffield, United Kingdom manufacturing and development facility. It was in 2009 that the company took possession of the facility when it acquired The Medical House, an auto-injector manufacturer (drug delivery systems that patients can use themselves). The Medical House was folded into Consort’s Bespak division, the company’s drug-delivery device division.
At the time of purchase, Consort Medical indicated it would seek to expand the Sheffield location. Now, all manufacturing and development services for Bespak will be located in Norfolk, United Kingdom.
A company spokeswoman told the Yorkshire Post, “It got to the point where the two teams were working so closely that Consort decided that to consolidate into one site made much better sense.”
In regard to redundancies created by the move, the closure is fraught. The spokeswoman, who remained anonymous, was reluctant to speak to the Post about the situation of employees at the Sheffield plant. She did say, “A number of employees were offered the chance to be able to transfer their jobs over to King’s Lynn, and at the time Consort provided quite a number of support measures for anyone who wanted to search for new opportunities.”
Consort Medical will continue to grow its injectables business, which has been bolstered considerably since the acquisition of The Medical House.
Consort Medical is headquartered in Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom. The company manufactures drug delivery systems and hospital products for the management of patient airways.
