Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and DrugAdministration for a system that is designed to relieve wrist pain.
The Integra TotalWrist Fusion System is described by the company as a solution for wrist arthrodesis (surgical fusion of a joint) that relieves wrist pain while reducing soft tissue irritation. The system provides a balance of compression and stability by combining Surfix locking technology and dynamic compression. Integra representatives showcased the Wrist Fusion System during the 77th Annual Meeting of theAmerican Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in New Orleans,La.
"The Integra Total Wrist FusionSystem is a significant addition to our family of upper extremity products,"said Robert Paltridge, Integra Extremity Reconstruction president. "It expands our portfolio of products that address severe wrist arthritis and gives surgeons another treatment option."
The wrist fusion system was one of several products Integra executives unveiled at the AAOS meeting. Another was the Integra Mozaik Moldable Morsels bone void filler, a product designed to fill gaps in the skeletal system of the extremities, spine and pelvis. When used with bone marrow aspirate from a patient, the Mozaik Moldable Morsels may replace the need to harvest bone marrow.
According to Integra, the Mozaik Moldable Morsels combines a collagen matrix with a highly pure form of beta-tricalcium phosphate to provide both compression resistance and a mineral source - two essential properties in bone healing. The Morsels guide the regeneration of new bone across gaps.
The U.S. market for bone graft substitutes in orthopedic spinal procedures is estimated at $1.5 billion, according to Integra. Last year, about 1 million orthopedic procedures were performed in the United States, including more than 500,000 spinal fusions, the company claimed.
Based inPlainsboro, N.J., Integra LifeSciences develops products used in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and general surgery.
