Abiomed Leader Michael Minogue Named AdvaMed Board Chairman

The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed), appointed Abiomed Chairman, president, and CEO Michael R. Minogue as Chairman of the AdvaMed Board of Directors for a two-year term, effective February 23. AdvaMed will host a virtual press conference with reporters on Thursday, March 11, at noon ET to introduce Chairman Minogue and AdvaMed president and CEO Scott Whitaker’s priorities for the association and industry going forward.
 
Minogue has been an AdvaMed Board member since 2007 and a Board Executive Committee member since 2009, during which he served on several committees overseeing membership, inclusion and diversity, payment policy, ethics, and international policy. In 2011, he was elected as the first Chairman of the newly created Emerging Growth Company Council—later AdvaMed Accel—AdvaMed’s division dedicated to smaller medical technology manufacturers’ needs. Minogue was Chairman of the Accel Board of Directors until 2014. In 2012, Minogue and AdvaMed co-founded MedTechVets.org, where he was Chairman until 2019.
 
Minogue has been Chairman, president, and CEO of Abiomed for 17 years. Before that, he spent 11 years with General Electric Medical Systems, where he held numerous leadership positions and was awarded three patents. He also served as an Infantry Officer in the U.S. Army, with multiple distinctions including Airborne, Ranger, Desert Storm Veteran, and Bronze Star.
 
“This past year, the medical technology community rose to the challenge presented by COVID-19,” Minogue told the press. “Our companies produced the PPE, diagnostic COVID-19 tests, and medical devices needed to help COVID-19 patients. Our employees continued to make life-saving products and support hospitals all over the world. I’m humbled and thankful for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of Advamed during this time. I hope to help our industry continue to improve and save patients’ lives.”
 
As Chairman, Minogue aims to strengthen the association’s and industry’s focus on patients and the impact AdvaMed companies make on patients’ lives. He will also build on outgoing Chairman (and Stryker Chairman/CEO) Kevin Lobo’s leadership and successful work to improve inclusion and diversity throughout the industry, with the added component of expanding the recruitment from U.S. military veterans.  MedTechVets is a nonprofit organization that assists and prepares transitioning service members and military veterans for employment in the medical device industry.
 
“Our nation’s military veterans are highly diverse and have a desire to continue to serve a purpose. This makes veterans an ideal match for our industry that is committed to serving others around the world,” he said.

Mike’s emphasis on putting patients first is a great example for our industry, and I know I speak for the entire Board when I say we look forward to his leadership.”

“Kevin led our association through the most difficult time our industry has seen in our lifetime,” Whitaker said of Lobo. “Kevin’s leadership was crucial—steady, innovative, and forward thinking. Under his leadership, AdvaMed rallied to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, from ensuring supply of critical medical supplies, such as PPE and diagnostic tests, to partnering with Government to ensure timely granting of emergency use approvals. He also championed diversity, equity and inclusion as well as patient advocacy. We thank him for his leadership and guidance, which will have a lasting impact on the industry and the patients we serve.”
 
AdvaMed accomplishments under Lobo’s leadership as chairman include:
 

• Creation of the MedDevice Network, to connect our companies with suppliers outside our industry to improve our ability meet the high demand for crucial COVID-related medical supplies
• Creation of the COVID-19 Testing Supply Registry to help the federal and state governments get a better understanding of the nation’s testing needs
• Full repeal of the $2-billion-a-year medical device excise tax
• Secured federal establishment of a new coverage pathway – MCIT – for breakthrough medical technologies
• Launch of The Story of MedTech, which now hosts nearly 100 unique stories about patients who have benefited from medical technology innovation
• Introduction of Safety.AdvaMed.Org, which describes the rigorous safety and efficacy standards medical technologies are held to
• Release of a new research study, Modernizing Medicare Coverage of Digital Health Technologies, which outlines steps CMS, HHS, and Congress might take to modernize the Medicare framework for coverage and payment of digital health technologies
• Launch of AdvaMed Advance, an industry convener dedicated to improving inclusion and diversity standards across the industry
• Unanimous Board approval of AdvaMed’s Principles on Health Equity
