As more medical devices are made powered, smart, or tasked with more functionality, supportive components need to be more robust. One critical element is the cable, which can serve a number of roles. Regardless of its responsibilities, however, it must remain flexible so as to not encumber the medical professional using it.
 
To offer insights on how material selection can affect the flexibility of the cable, Randy Mikolai, medical key account manager for Northwire, a LEMO Group Company, responded to a couple questions. In addition to looking at the layers of the cable itself, he also provides a few design “tricks” engineers can keep in mind to improve flexibility.
