New Facility for Medical Coating Opened by DSM

DSM has opened the doors of a new facility that offers coating services using its proprietary ComfortCoat technology. The company partners with medical device makers to offer services including coating, testing, packaging and labeling, as well as additional customized processes such as cutting. The coating services plant is located in the Netherlands.

DSM representatives work directly with device makers on each project. DSM officials claim that the company has a “fundamental and molecular understanding” of the chemical science and the application processes used in the company’s coating technologies since it also develops and manufactures medical coatings, which are applied to numerous types of interventional devices in cardiology, urology and other clinical fields.

“DSM’s coatings business leverages our deep and wide expertise in medical device materials manufacturing and design,” said Dr. Hinke Malda, director of medical coatings for DSM Biomedical. “Launching an in-house medical coating service means we can add further strategic value to our work with partners and customers through full-service support from coating selection to delivering fully coated device parts.”

DSM operates an ISO Class 8 clean room, and the company’s quality management system is compliant with ISO 13485 standards. DSM coats medical device parts using a dip coating process and offers UV curing to instantly dry coatings, which can help increase production speed, increase yield rates, improve properties such as scratch and solvent resistance, and facilitate superior bonding, according to the company.

DSM’s Biomedical division is located in Exton, Pa., with additional facilities in Berkeley, Calif., and the Netherlands.
