Stryker has acquired MOLLI Surgical, a privately-held company that specializes in wire-free, soft tissue localization technology for breast-conserving surgery.

The MOLLI 2 localization system, launched last April, is designed for reliability and ease-of-use for a more efficient surgical workflow. It lets surgeons pinpoint cancerous tissue to potentially improve cosmesis.

The wire-free technology includes the MOLLI Marker, which is the smallest available on the market at 3.2 mm (about the size of a sesame seed) and it’s detectable in dense breasts and hematoma. It marks precisely where lesions are located before breast cancer surgery.

MOLLI 2’s tablet offers surgeons four varieties of real-time feedback: distance, visual, auditory, and 3D directional guidance.

This past April, the Toronto-based company also rolled out OncoPen, a sleek, pen-like wand used to precisely target and remove cancerous lesions in the breast.

“Stryker is dedicated to helping oncology surgeons advance surgical treatment through continual innovation and strategic partnerships,” said Andrés Rosales, vice president and general manager of Stryker’s Endoscopy business. “The acquisition of MOLLI Surgical represents a significant step forward in our goal to provide surgeons with the most advanced tools to improve patient care. MOLLI Surgical complements our existing portfolio in the breast cancer space, which includes our SPY fluorescence imaging technology for lymphatic mapping and lighted retractors.”

The companies did not disclose details of the transaction.
