Medical device maker St. Jude Medical Inc. has opened a new 60,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Liberty, S.C.

Opened in March, the new facility will manufacture hybrid microelectronic circuits, which are the “brains” inside pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), according to the company.

St. Jude Medical Inc. built the facility on a 24-acre parcel of land next to an existing 100,000-square-foot plant, where the company designs, develops and makes high-voltage capacitors for its ICDs.

To staff the facility, St. Paul, Minn.-based St. Jude Medical expects to hire 300 employees during the next five years.
