The world’s urinary catheter market is primed for a prosperous future. Data from Kenneth Research indicates the sector will swell 5.83 percent annually through 2031 to reach $4.6 billion. Key growth drivers include increasing chronic kidney disease caseloads, higher numbers of surgical procedures and urinary incontinence diagnoses, and of course, the world’s aging population. Kidney diseases are a leading cause of death around globally. According to Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) statistics, the prevalence of chronic kidney disease worldwide increased from 559,268,790 cases in 2010 to 697,294,306 cases in 2019. Additionally, the disease killed 1,427,231 people in 2019, up from 1,108,207 victims nine years prior. Furthermore, the incidence of the disease grew from 14,180,547 cases to 18,986,903 cases during tha period. The world’s geriatric population is rapidly increasing and so is the concern for different types of diseases. By the end of 2050, one in six people are expected to be over the age of 65, according to United Nations data. The organization’s statistics also show that one in 11 people were over the age of 65 in 2019. Most of the population is unable to live a normal life and often require medical or physical support to perform their daily activities, thereafter driving the need for products such as urinary catheters. On the other hand, the increasing cases of chronic kidney disease, which is driving the need for these catheters, are also expected to drive market growth. The global urinary catheters market generated $2.63 billion in revenue last year and is expected to reach $4.59 billion by the end of 2031. The market growth can also be attributed to the increasing number of surgical procedures of different types of diseases along with the growing prevalence of urinary incontinence. For instance, according to statistics by the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), there were 45,398 total coronary artery bypass surgeries in Germany. Additionally, hip replacement surgeries and caesarian sections in the country grew from 232,126 cases and 206,746 cases, respectively, in 2010 to 261,675 cases and 230,348 cases, respectively, in 2019. Besides this, the surge in product development and increasing health expenditures globally is also expected to boost market growth in the coming years. The current health expenditure as a share of GDP touched 9.84 percent in 2019, up from 9.09 percent in 2008, according to the World Bank. The global urinary catheter market is segmented by region into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa. Amongst the market in these regions, the market in North America generated the largest revenue of $1.16 billion last year and is projected to reach $2 billion by the end of 2031. It has been estimated that in the United States, about 33 million people have overactive bladder (OAB), according to the statistics by the Urology Care Foundation, the official foundation of the American Urological Association. Moreover, the statistics also stated that a quarter to a third of the nation’s population suffered from urinary incontinence. According to the statistics by the National Kidney Foundation, one in three adults in the United States was at risk for kidney disease. Moreover, the statistics also stated that an estimated 37 Million people were affected by kidney disease. The region’s market is further segmented by country into the United States and Canada.
