Siemens’ Varian Wins FDA Nod for RapidArc Dynamic Radiotherapy Solution

Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company, has earned U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its RapidArc Dynamic solution, a technology that leverages advanced algorithms to shorten the time between consultation to radiation therapy treatment.

The company said RapidArc Dynamic features advanced precision and control capabilities that could significantly reduce the risks of radiation therapy in a single solution, while also enabling efficiency.

Early research has showed RapidArc Dynamic’s potential to reduce dose to organs at risk by up to 50%, according to Varian. It’s available as an optional feature on the company’s Eclipse treatment planning software on the TrueBeam 4.1 radiotherapy platform. The company also said using it can speed plan optimization and dose calculation by up to 70%, and early experiences showed the number of treatment arcs could be reduced by up to half.

The technology’s dynamic collimator can be adjusted in real-time and the gantry strategically paused during arc rotation for increased control. It combines the precision of modulated ports and arc therapy in a single treatment field.

An Auto-Skin Flash tool automates and simplifies a multi-step process and streamlines workflow for Multi-Criteria Optimization (MCO), RapidPlan, and clinical goals templates within the Eclipse treatment planning system.
