The House and Senate should work together to ensure proper oversight of direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising for restricted medical devices, a lawmaker says.

In a letter to Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman Herb Kohl (D-WI) suggests equal regulatory oversight be applied to medical device DTC advertising as to pharmaceuticals.

His letter follows a Senate oversight hearing on DTC advertising for restricted medical devices held last month in which medical experts testified that a significant number of device ads present unbalanced medical risk and benefit information.
