Sanbor Medical Restructures, Sells Division

Segue Manufacturing purchases Sanbor's Interconnect division.

Sanbor Corporation, based in Allentown, Pa., has taken steps to focus solely on medical devices and life sciences manufacturing.

According to company officials, in order to further concentrate on high-level medical device contract assembly opportunities, the company divested its Interconnect custom cabling division. The division was sold to Segue Manufacturing Services in Lowell, Mass. Sanbor had moved its medical cable business to Segue a few years ago in order to focus on complete device assembly. The deal was the final step in that process.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sanbor Medical provides fully integrated contract manufacturing services for finished medical and dental devices, single-use disposables, and other medical device electronic and mechanical assemblies.

The deal included Sanbor Interconnect’s 55,000-square-foot facility in Xiamen, China, and an engineering and sales office in Allentown, Pa. The newly named Segue Asia will offer lower-cost electronics assembly, while Segue performs cable final assembly at its factory in Lowell, outside Boston.

Going forward, Sanbor Corporation will be called Sanbor Medical, which will remain as a Pennsylvania corporation with full ownership of Rela Medtech, an FDA-registered, ISO 13485-certified factory in Xiamen.

As part of the restructuring, Joe Horvath, former vice president and general manager, will assume the role of president and CEO from Wayne Meng, who will remain as the company Chairman. John Dunbar will become executive vice president and general manager, overseeing operation of the Rela Medtech division. He currently serves as chief operating officer.

According to Peter Frasso, president and CEO at Segue, “Sanbor has received quality awards by a number of Fortune 500 clients. Its quality systems and added capabilities will benefit our current customer base and offer us entrance into new markets and applications such as medical device, aviation, professional sound system and data communication.”

Segue provides electro-mechanical sub-assembly, cable and harness assembly and machining services to the military, alternative energy, semiconductor and electronics capital equipment, medical and life sciences, homeland security, and industrial equipment industries.
