Philips has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled Compact Ultrasound 5500CV portable ultrasound system.

The portable ultrasound was designed for use at the bedside in hospitals and community care systems. The company aims to bring advanced cardiac imaging to newborns, children, the elderly, and less mobile patients.

Compact 5500CV is compatible with the X7-2t and X8-2t transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) transducers to enable high-resolution cardiac imaging. TEE is crucial during catheter-based cardiac procedures where precise imaging is necessary.

The technology leverages Philips xMatrix transducers and supports xPlane imaging, meaning the system can capture two cross-sectional views simultaneously with one probe pass. According to Philips, this captures twice the clinical information in the same time as traditional 2D methods.

An AI-powered Auto Measure function speeds routine 2D and Doppler cardiac measurements by up to 50%. The latest S12-4 transducer compatibility expands capabilities to pediatric cardiac and neonatal head exams, as well.

Compact 5500CV has the same architecture and user interface as the company’s EPIQ and Affiniti ultrasounds. Real-time procedural and diagnostic support are made possible through compatibility with Philips’ Collaboration Live, as well as remote staff training.

Ultrasound Workspace provides a vendor-neutral platform platform for echocardiography viewing, analysis, and reporting.

“With the new capabilities of Compact Ultrasound 5500CV, we advance portable ultrasound, ensuring healthcare providers get both mobility and high-quality imaging, while also maximizing their investment through our comprehensive ultrasound services,” said David Handler, Business Leader, Cardiology Ultrasound at Philips. “AI-driven features like Auto Measure streamline workflows by automating key cardiac measurements, while Live 3D TEE imaging provides real-time, high-resolution visualization. By bringing premium-level technology into a compact, accessible solution, we empower clinicians to deliver fast, accurate diagnoses across diverse care settings, improving patient outcomes and expanding access to advanced cardiac imaging.”

Earlier this week, the company announced that it was the leading applicant in medical technology at the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2024, filing 594 medtech patent applications.
