Perseon Microthermx Microwave Ablation System Earns New Indication Clearance

Perseon Corp., formerly BSD Medical Corp., which makes heat therapy medical systems to treat cancer, has earned 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the Microthermx microwave ablation system for the specific indication of laparoscopic ablation procedures using image guidance.

“This new indication increases the type of cases that our technology will be used for and the opportunity to expand the use of Microthermx in surgical oncology,” said CEO Clint Carnell. “This moves us closer to achieving our clinical initiatives to benefit patients, physicians, and the healthcare system worldwide.”

The standing, rolling system has a relatively small footprint, making it easier to store in hospital settings. The inputs are controlled by the clinician, and ablation size can be modified by varying time, power and number of antennas. The system allows for two or three antennas (probes) placed in a non-parallel manner, designed to increase procedural flexibility and potential for avoiding critical structures.

Salt Lake City, Utah-based BSD Medical changed its name to Perseon Corp. in February.

The company’s new name included the new tagline: “Science for Humanity.”

In conjunction with the corporate name change to Perseon, the ticker symbol for BSD Medical’s common shares traded on Nasdaq changed from “BSDM” to “PRSN.”
