Olympus has launched two new jaw designs in its PowerSeal sealer/divider portfolio of advanced bipolar surgical energy devices: The PowerSeal Curved Jaw, double-action (SJDA) and PowerSeal Curved Jaw, single-action (CJSA).

The PowerSeal franchise now has three jaw designs in three shaft lengths to support dissection, grasping, and sealing preference and techniques during surgery. Olympus said1 these devices promote procedural efficiency and comfort thanks to a multifunctional feature set and ergonomic design.

The company also said1 PowerSeal design needs less squeeze force than competitor instruments to close the jaws, without sacrificing jaw force or sealing capability. PowerSeal devices, which are single-use, can be used in both laparoscopic and open surgery.

Launched in 2021, Olympus’ PowerSeal devices are used to seal pulmonary vessels, tissue bundles, and lymphatics up to and including 7 mm. Their energy activation doesn’t require full closure of the jaws, which facilitates spot coagulation of surface bleeders or activation on thick tissue when needed.

The portfolio also features a reduced distance to device controls (jaw lever and activation button), lower squeeze forces, smooth jaw rotation, and a contoured handle, Olympus said.

The company advised against reusing or re-sterilizing PowerSeal devices due to the potential for excessive wear, performance degradation, and cross-contamination. Olympus also warned using the devices with other companies’ generators can cause undesired tissue effect or injury to the patient or surgical team.

PowerSeal SJDA and CJSA devices are now cleared for sale in the U.S., Putero Rico, Canada, Australia, the EU, and Thailand. The CJDA device is commercialized in all global regions except for China.

“We are very excited to expand our advanced bipolar surgical energy portfolio with the addition of these two new POWERSEAL devices. Meeting physician needs continues to be the primary driver of the product design and functionality,” said Phil Roy, global VP and GM for Surgical Devices in Olympus’ Therapeutic Solutions division. “POWERSEAL devices are developed with a commitment to meeting our goals of sealing strength, efficiency and physician comfort.”
