Olympus has launched its THUNDERBEAT Open Fine Jaw Type X single-use hybrid ultrasonic and bipolar electrosurgical instrument for open surgery. It’s currently available in Japan and commercial launch in Europe, the U.S., and South Korea is expected in October.

The THUNDERBEAT hybrid energy devices remove the need for multiple instruments during surgery to boost efficiency in the operating room.

“This latest addition to our differentiated THUNDERBEAT line of products continues to deliver on Olympus’ commitment to offering hospitals a full portfolio of Advanced Energy devices providing best-in-class functionality for numerous procedures and specialties in minimally invasive and open surgery,” Phil Roy, global VP and GM of Olympus’ Surgical Devices Business Unit, told the press.

The device is designed for open surgeries needing delicate and fine tissue dissection like thyroidectomy or radial neck dissection. A new thermal shield improves the grasping surface’s thermal profile to lower risk of unintended heat damage. The jaw design has a finely curved tip for precise dissection and better visibility during use.
