MPO loyalists just couldn’t resist a good fight this past week.

Interest in the ugly proxy battle between Masimo Chairman/CEO Joe Kiani and Politan Capital Management drove significant site traffic as readers turned to MPO’s website for both background and updates on the standoff and the outcome. The fight reached its climax mid-week with Kiani’s resignation from the company he founded and built, and current board member Michelle Brennan ascending to interim chief executive. Kiani’s resignation follows a two-year proxy battle with Politan Capital, which gained two seats on Masimo’s six-member board last June and nominated two additional candidates this past spring amid the company’s plans to spin out its consumer business, including its home audio equipment as well as its high-tech baby monitor system and health-focused smartwatches. Before its Sept. 19 meeting, Masimo’s board urged investors to vote against Politan Capital’s board candidates, since it would effectively oust Kiani. The company’s stock price jumped upon Kiani’s resignation.

While Kiani’s fight with Politan Capital amassed considerable pageviews, it was not the most popular digital news item this past week. Stryker achieved that honor with its acquisition of NICO Corporation, a privately-held firm that offers a systematic approach to minimally invasive surgery for tumor and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) procedures. The acquisition, according to Stryker, strengthens the company’s commitment to neurotechnology through tumor and stroke care. NICO’s technologies integrate imaging and intervention to provide a safe, minimally disruptive approach to brain surgery.

Integer and Philips also proved popular with MPO readers. Integer attracted visitors with news of its recent facility expansions in Ireland, while Philips stood out by announcing results of a collaborative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) it conducted with Jackson Health System, one of the largest U.S. public health systems. The pair conducted the assessment to measureg the sustainability impact of transitioning to Philips next-generation monitoring solutions. Findings suggest that patient monitoring can become part of an overall carbon reduction strategy for health systems.
