It was a Medtech Makers week on the MPO website.

Editor-in-Chief Sean Fenske’s interviews with medtech professionals dominated pageviews over the past seven days, proving more popular than news items from Royal Philips and Rockley Photonics. Favored topics included nitinol and its role in medical device manufacturing, sustainability, and maintaining growth amid various industry challenges. Those that provided insight were Scott Robertson, Ph.D., vice president of Nitinol Technology at Resonetics; Ron Kurz, senior director and general manager of business development and medical business at Canon Virginia Inc.; and John Walter, vice president of Custom Product Solutions at Argon Medical Devices.

Philips broke the Medtech Makers monopoly with the launch of its Visual Patient Avatar, a new monitoring solution that translates critical, yet complex patient data into a straightforward visual design as an easy-to-understand avatar display. Visual Patient Avatar is designed to improve situational awareness with elegance by visualizing vital information through animations, colors and shapes.

Rockley Photonics also prevented a Medtech Makers clean sweep by sharing initial results from two IRB-approved human studies using a first-generation Alpha prototype of its non-invasive and laser-based cuffless blood pressure monitor. The wearable device is currently in advanced development. The findings demonstrated stable BP prediction over a one-month longitudinal study with no observed increase in error after single calibration.
