Reflection and rumination proved popular this past week on the MPO website, as cybervisitors flocked to stories that enabled them to both recollect the past and anticipate the future.

One peek into the past came with news of Sil-Pro President Lee Charles Carver’s death earlier this month from cancer. Carver was well-known fixture within the medical silicone molding industry, having founded the Delano, Minn.-based contract manufacturing firm in 1998. Carver served in the U.S. Army and played competitive softball for a number of years. He also owned several red Corvettes during his retirement and co-founded a local Corvette Club. He is survived by his wife, three children, eight grandchildren, two brothers, and one sister.

MPO Advisory Board members also took a stroll down memory lane, mulling the year’s top medtech headlines and issuing their own forecasts for 2023. Members who provided input included Randy Clark, president of Health Solutions at Flex; Steve Maylish, chief commercial officer at at Fusion Biotec; Paul Orlando, Global Operations Business Development lead for OLYMPUS SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIES AMERICA; Dennis Rubenacker, senior partner at Noblitt & Rueland (on behalf of EAB member Brent Noblitt); and
Dave Sheppard, CMAA, co-founder and managing director at MedWorld Advisors.

New beginnings were solidly represented by the FDA’s clearance of the next-generation Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system, the first patient implant of a modular cardiac rhythm management system in Boston Scientific Corp.’s MODULAR ATP clinical trial, and Fresenius Medical Care’s new CEO. Helen Giza—previously deputy CEO of the company—succeeds Dr. Carla Kriwet, who will leave the company at her own request and by mutual agreement due to strategic differences, according to the company. Giza will also continue serve as CFO of Fresenius Medical Care until a successor is appointed.
