Merit Medical Will Expand Virginia Facility

Commonwealth provides economic support for recruitment and training.

Merit Medical Systems Inc., will invest $1 million to expand its operations in the Richmond, Va., area. The project will create 75 new jobs, the company reported.

Merit Medical, a manufacturer of disposable medical devices, is based in South Jordan, Utah. It has had a facility in Virginia since 2004.

“Merit Medical Systems has become a nationally recognized name since its founding nearly 25 years ago,” said Bob McDonnell, governor of the commonwealth of Virginia.

State and local economic development groups worked to secure the project. The Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide funding to support the company’s recruitment and training activities.

McDonnell said the company has been successful despite the recent economic climate, and credited its facility in his state as part of the reason. The company’s leadership agreed.

“We are excited to expand our operations in Chesterfield County, where we have found highly skilled employees and great access to the East Coast,” said Fred P. Lampropoulos, Merit’s chairman and CEO.“Our business there is thriving even in these uncertain economic times.”

Founded in 1987, Merit Medical Systems employs more than 2,100 people at facilities in Texas, Massachusetts, Utah and Virginia, as well as China, Denmark, France, Ireland and the Netherlands.

The company’s products are used in interventional and diagnostic procedures, particularly in cardiology, radiology and gastroenterology.
