Medtronic Leads in Question Again

Medtronic leads show high fracture rates with ICD therapy defibrillators.

A lead manufactured by Medtronic Inc. has a higher fracture rate when used with implantable cardiac resynchronization (ICD) therapy defibrillators compared with conventional ICDs. A study released May 5 at the Heart Rhythm Society’s annual meeting in San Francisco, Calif., showed that the fracture rate with the Sprint Fidelis lead was 2.4 percent with the advanced ICD, compared with 1 percent when used with a conventional ICD.

Medtronic’s Sprint Fidelis lead was recalled in 2007. The recall resulted in a $268 million legal settlement.

Medtronic is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minn.
