Medrad to Build $45M Plant in PA

Medical device manufacturer Medrad, Inc., headquartered in Indianola, PA., will spend $44.8 million to build a new manufacturing plant at the Victory Road Business Park in Clinton Township, about 14 miles from the company’s existing headquarters and manufacturing location. The company expects the new plant to double its existing manufacturing capacity for disposable syringes used to inject dyes and contrast media useful in diagnostic imaging.
“We started this expansion project a couple years ago and considered 140 to 150 locations around the world where it would make sense to have a plant,” said Medrad director of global facilities Eric Ferchaw. “I was a bit surprised that we ended up picking a site so close.”
About 1,100 of the firm’s 1,500 employees currently work in two Pennsylvania facilities. The others work out of 13 global facilities located across Europe and Asia. “The driving factor in deciding where to locate the new plant was that we are approaching capacity at our existing Pennsylvania plant,” Ferchaw continued. “By working with current employees, we believe we can get the new plant up and running in time to stay ahead of product demand.”
The schedule for the new facility calls for construction to commence this August and the plant to come on line by late 2007.
