MediPurpose Releases Updated Baby Heel Stick

The lancet comes in sizes for newborns and preemies.

Singapore-based medical device manufacturer and distributor MediPurpose has launched the babyLance infant heel incision device in Austria, a redesigned iteration of the company’s original heelstick device.

Heel sticks are a minimally invasive method of obtaining capillary blood samples for various laboratory tests, especially newborn screens and glucose levels.

Used by neonatal caregivers to collect blood samples from infants, the new BabyLance features what the company calls an ergonomic design to provide a secure and stable grip. The device is touted to be easy to activate with a redesigned trigger mechanism, which is designed to help deliver a consistent incision without touching the baby’s tender nerve fibers. MediPurpose designed the stick this way in response to customer feedback.

BabyLance will be distributed in Austria by MediPurpose’s Austrian medical product distributor for its lancet product family, Medikus.

The BabyLance comes in two options: The BabyLance BLP for newborns, which delivers an incision depth of 1 mm; And the BabyLance BLP for premature babies, which delivers an incision depth of 0.85 mm, according to the firm.

“Medikus made significant progress with the original BabyLance in the Austrian market,” said Michael Riddle, MediPurpose’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “With this new product, we have every confidence they will be even more successful in the promotion and sale of our BabyLance infant heelstick to the Austrian medical community.”
