Joint Project from J&J and DexCom Gets European Approval

J&J and DexCom insulin pump and glucose monitoring device is approved.

European Union regulators have cleared Johnson & Johnson’s (J&J) Animas Vibe insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring device for sale.

The device, which measures glucose levels in interstitial fluid, combines J&J’s Animas insulin pump with continuous blood glucose monitoring technology from San Diego, Calif.-based DexCom Inc.

DexCom’s glucose monitors can be worn for up to a week before they need to be changed. The Animas Vibe provides real-time blood sugar information, alerts for high and low readings, and trend information, according to J&J.

The device will be available first in the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Germany and Italy. It will be available in other markets later this year and in 2012.

J&J is headquartered in New Brunswick, N.J.
