Johnson & Johnson MedTech is featuring the latest long-term data that confirms its Impella CP intravascular flow pump’s survival benefit at this week’s Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) conference.

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published evidence showing Impella CP’s survival benefit, which resulted in upgraded recommendations in American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guidelines to treat cardiogenic shock. J&J MedTech chief medical and scientific officer Navin Kapur MD pointed to the company’s two decade history of defining and advancing unloading science

“We are committed to leading in innovation—as demonstrated through nine generations of Impella CP—and tackling some of the greatest challenges in the cardiovascular space because we want to help as many patients as possible have an opportunity for heart recovery,” Dr. Kapur told the press.

The ninth generation Impella CP boasts design updates that optimize functionality and improve ease of use, the company said.

Impella CP’s guideline updates and long-term data

Its ACC/AHA guidelines were updated to Class 2a thanks to data showing increased survival in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and cardiogenic shock. The American Academy of Thoracic Surgery (AATS) also elevated Impella recommendations in patients with acute myocardial infarction cardiogenic shock (AMICS) to Class 1.

Data from the DanGer Shock randomized controlled trial showed at ten years, patients with Impella CP had an absolute mortality reduction of 16.3% compared to standard care. Impella CP patients also gained about 600 additional days alive at ten years.

New DanGer Shock data will be presented at TCT 2025 from sub analyses of the trial. Included will be data on Impella support for HR-PCI patients, as well as live and recorded cases with clinicians using Impella.
