Johnson & Johnson is expanding the U.S. rollout of its latest advancement in presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (PC-IOLs).

Tecnis PureSee IOL is an extended depth of focus (EDOF) lens engineered to support visual clarity and quality for patients undergoing cataract surgery. According to J&J, the IOL provides excellent distance and intermediate vision with some near vision. 97% of patients reported no “very bothersome” visual disturbances and excellent vision both day and night.

The PC-IOL is the first, only FDA-approved EDOF IOL with no warning on loss of contrast sensitivity, J&J claims. Contrast sensitivity is a patient’s ability to distinguish and object from its background—an important part of visual quality, especially in low-light or foggy conditions. Aspheric monofocal IOLs are considered the benchmark for preserving contrast sensitivity.

Tecnis PureSee IOL addresses both cataract-related vision loss and the effects of presbyopia, which happens when the eyes gradually lose the ability to see objects clearly up close.

J&J also created a new patient lifestyle quiz designed to help them reflect on daily activities, vision needs, and goals ahead of cataract surgery. Patients can use the quiz as a starting point for conversations with their eye care professional about which Tecnis IOL might be right for them.

Comments from Johnson & Johnson and clinicians

Erin Powers, president, Surgical Vision, North America, Johnson & Johnson: “With the full U.S. availability of TECNIS PureSee IOL, we are expanding access to an important extended depth of focus option that reflects our commitment to innovation, visual quality, and patient satisfaction. Patients today want vision solutions that support how they live their lives every day. TECNIS PureSee IOL builds on the trusted TECNIS platform to help meet those expectations while giving surgeons greater flexibility to personalize care.”

Daniel Chang, MD, cataract and refractive surgeon, Empire Eye & Laser Center: “I was an investigator with the TECNIS PureSee IOL, so I have firsthand experience with this lens, and I’m excited to have this option in my practice for patients. This is the first presbyopia-correcting lens I’ve seen that has similar, if not in some cases even fewer, night vision symptoms than a monofocal lens. This is a very exciting time for the TECNIS platform. I think TECNIS PureSee IOL is going to be a landmark advancement.”
