Japan leads the clot management devices market in the Asia-Pacific region, thanks to its geriatric population and increasing cases of cardiovascular diseases. GlobalData predicts the country will retain its market position through 2025.

“With Japan leading the world’s aging population, there is always scope for innovation in the field of medical equipment, and this provides an opportunity for foreign companies to invest in the country,” noted Ayshi Ganguly, a medical devices analyst at GlobalData.

A recent report from the company indicates that Japan’s clot management market is currently led by foreign companies such as Boston Scientific Corp., Teleflex Inc., and Penumbra Inc. These companies collectively accounted for around 70% of the market last year.

Penumbra and Asahi Intecc Co. Ltd., a Japanese medical device company, are partnering to bring Penumbra’s Indigo aspiration system to the Japanese market once regulatory approval is obtained. The collaboration will give Penumbra an opportunity to use Asahi’s leadership and expertise in the Japanese market.

“Through collaborations and innovations, Japan aims to become the home for many leading medical device firms and provide its people with the best and latest available treatment options,” Ganguly said. “This will also allow foreign companies to expand their network and thereby increase their market share.”
