Holmed Rolls Out New Products for AANS Meeting

New technology focuses on disposable, single-use tools.

Holmed Corporation has released two new product lines in time for this year’s installment of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Scientific Meeting held in Miami, Fla., April 16-18.

The company unveiled a new line of disposable “one-per-case” torque limiters that are designed to accommodate existing handles and driver bits while providing surgeons and spine vendors with improved calibration, according to the company. The firm also released what it’s calling an “industry first”—a new line of powered, disposable, drill-and-reamer rod deburrers that are designed to withstand the tough cobalt chrome alloys that increasingly are being used in today’s spinal cases.

Russell P. Holmes, president of Holmed said his firm’s “traditional engineering capabilities” in torque products and development of reusable ball-and-cam torque mechanisms, provided a “natural path” for the company to develop a disposable line.

For reusable torque instruments, the patent pending ball-and-cam technology provides longer and better performance compared to traditional spring-and-ratchet torque mechanisms, according to company officials. This translates to torque instruments that stay in calibration longer.

“We are excited about launching the disposable torque products that satisfy our customers which require a one-per-case option,” said Peter Randall, vice president of sales. “We believe this will save our OEM customers and their surgeons time and money and provide the highest level of confidence of always being in calibration.”

The new disposable rod deburrer eliminates instrument reprocessing costs and the challenges of cleaning hard-to-clean deburrer surfaces. According to Holmed officials, the disposable rod deburrer works with a wide range of speeds and torques that are available in existing drill-and-reamer systems.

“Holmed has traditionally been supplying OEM surgical instrument customers with quality reusable instrumentation and will continue to do so, and is committed to satisfying today’s evolving surgical customers,” said Chris Zorn, marketing director.

South Easton, Mass.-based Holmed Corp. is a privately held developer and manufacturer of surgical instrumentation and systems for the handheld orthopedic and spine instrumentation markets. Devices include torque products, rod products, handles and screwdrivers, curettes, MIS systems, retractors, and general instruments.
