GE HealthCare and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging launched a Care Innovation Hub.

This joint research collaboration has three aims: accessibility to advanced medical imaging, non-invasive diagnosis and management of neurological and neurodegenerative disease, and precision oncology. The Care Innovation Hub combines the strengths of academia and industry to create, evaluate, and translate novel technology into a clinical setting.

This project adds to a decades-long history between GE HealthCare and UCSF. It combines UCSF’s clinical expertise in brain health, neurodegenerative disease, and oncology with GE HealthCare’s knowledge in research and product development.

The duo hopes to significantly improve medical imaging services by building more automated imaging methods. This could include patient-specific MRI techniques that could adapt to patients in real-time. Projects in this focus area hone in on advancing quantitative imaging for cardiac and musculoskeletal disease, as well as building methods to allow high-quality remote scanning.

Further, the team plans to explore the links between white matter injury, vascular disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. They also aim to identify ways to predict treatment efficacy in brain health interventions.

Finally, GE HealthCare and UCSF seek to develop quantitative imaging methods to monitor patients’ response to radiopharmaceutical therapies (RPTs) and build protocols to expand their access. The duo plans to standardize processes for visualizing alpha-emitting RPTs.

“Our collaboration with GE HealthCare brings a practical focus on addressing well-defined clinical objectives,” said Sharmila Majumdar, Ph.D., Research Vice Chair in the UCSF Department of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging. “Together, we’re accelerating innovation in ways that will improve access to care and outcomes across healthcare settings.”

“We’re honored to collaborate with UCSF on this important work, which has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and address life-threatening diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and prostate cancer worldwide,” added Erin Angel, Ph.D., GE HealthCare’s Global VP, Research and Scientific Affairs. “By combining our strengths, we’re taking steps toward solutions that meet real clinical needs. Together, we’re building something we hope will make a meaningful difference for patients and the future of healthcare.”
