GE Healthcare Acquires Applied Precision

GE Healthcare announces its acquisition of Applied Precision, plans to expand pharmaceutical and life science reasearch offerings.

GE Healthcare has acquired Applied Precision, Inc., a cellular imaging technology supplier for the cell biology and biomedical research sectors. This acquisition will allow GE Healthcare, a General Electric Company, to expand its product and service offerings in pharmaceutical and life science research.

“Applied Precision is a company with a strong reputation for innovation and is a great strategic fit with our Cell Technologies business,” said Kieran Murphy, president and CEO of GE Healthcare Life Sciences. “The combination of GE Healthcare’s expertise in cell science, together with the team at Applied Precision, will help us drive development of new technologies and create an extensive offering across the full spectrum of cell biology research.”

Applied Precision’s proprietary technologies, high-resolution and super-resolution microscopy instruments with software and data visualization tools, are complimentary to GE Healthcare’s IN Cell Analyzer Systems, which are used for high-throughput sub-cellular analysis in cell biology research, GE executives said. This type of imaging technology is currently central to many areas of cell biology such as drug discovery and biomarker research.

“The worldwide resources of GE Healthcare will allow us to significantly widen our reach into new markets and provide a stronger support network for our existing customers,” said Joe Victor, Applied Precision CEO. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to jointly develop new technologies, products and applications for life science research.”

Chalfront, St. Giles, United Kingdom-headquartered GE Healthcare plans to retain the Applied Precision headquarters facility in Issaquah, Wash. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close this quarter. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
