First Medical Device Sterilization Company Comes to Dominican Republic

Las Americas Industrial Free Zone Park (ZFLA) has announced it will host Cosmed Group, which will become the first company dedicated to sterilization of medical devices in the country, with an investment that will exceed $20 million.
 
Claudia Pellerano, president of ZFLA, explained that the arrival of these services in the country, hand in hand with a world-renowned company, marks a milestone in the country’s medical device manufacturing industry and will turn the Dominican Republic into a more competitive destination for new investments in this important and demanding sector.
 
He explained the company will begin its construction and installation process in the industrial park this year and expected to begin operations by the end of 2019. The initiative was presented to the President of the Dominican Republic, Danilo Medina, during a meeting at the National Palace, where Cosmed Group’s COO, David Howe, and its commercial director, Clark Houghtling, were participating, along with Claudia Pellerano president of ZFLA; Luis Manuel Pellerano, commercial director of ZFLA; and Luisa Fernandez, executive director of the National Free Zones Council.
 
“The opportunity of a medical device manufacturing company to conclude its production chain, which ends with the sterilization of the product, represents a significant reduction in operating costs; guarantees less exposure of the devices to handling, raising their quality; and it allows the companies to take advantage of the strategic location of the country to make their distribution of the devices directly to their final destinations, without having to take them to other destinations to do the sterilization process, which reduces costs and delivery time,” noted Pellerano.
 
The offer of this service adds great value to the country as an investment option and reduces the competitiveness gap with respect to other free zone destinations in the region.
 
The company Cosmed Group has 37 years of experience in the sterilization of spaces and medical supplies in the United States and in the set-up of facilities in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Australia, which together with the experience and high standards of operation of ZFLA, as a strategic partner, it will position the Dominican Republic on the radar of medical device manufacturing companies that seek to establish operations outside the borders of their countries of origin.
