Covidien Announces New Endomechanical Positioning System

The system will be used to position mesh over hernias.

Mansfield, Mass.-based company Covidien has announced a new endomechanical device, the AccuMesh positioning system. The device is meant to partner with the existing device Parietex, a polyester mesh resorbable film that surgeons implant to treat hernias. Parietex is also manufactured by Covidien.

Endomechanical devices are used in minimally invasive surgical procedures that require little to no cutting. Rather, they are typically inserted via a body cavity or hollow organ. Laparoscopes and endoscopes are some better known examples of such devices.

The company claims that AccuMesh will be able to position the Parietex film accurately to a 3-5 cm overlap of the mesh and the edge of the defect. “Accurately positioning the mesh relative to the defect using current techniques is considered one of the most difficult mesh-related steps in the procedure,” said Dean J. Mikami, M.D., assistant professor of surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center.

Covidien predicts that AccuMesh will deliver improved accuracy and faster operative time compared to traditional laparoscopic ventral hernia repair methods due to its expandable frame and precise rotational ability and control.

Covidien provides a range of medical devices, including quite a few hernia care devices.
