Alcon has begun a non-exclusive partnership with ophthalmic device company RxSight to jointly develop adjustable, presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (PC-IOLs).

RxSight’s post-operative, light-adjustable technology will be combined with Alcon’s PCIOL optical designs. The merged technologies aim to create technology that lets surgeons fine-tune visual outcomes for cataract patients who choose a PCIOL.

$60 million will be paid upfront to RxSight in order to start developing this technology. Alcon said the company could be awarded up to an additional $140 million as it reaches development and regulatory milestones.

Alcon said it’ll lead global commercialization and RxSight will manage development and manufacturing, receiving royalties on net sales.

Comments from Alcon and RxSight

David Endicott, CEO, Alcon: “Our leading PCIOLs have helped millions of patients reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after cataract surgery. Together with RxSight’s technology, we have the opportunity to develop tunable PCIOLs, giving surgeons even greater confidence to refine outcomes after surgery.

Ron Kurtz, president and CEO, RxSight: “We are excited to work with Alcon to provide patients greater access to outcomes customized to their needs after surgery. This collaboration underscores our belief in the importance of adjustability and will help accelerate its expansion across a wider base of patients.
