Aircraft Medical, the Edinburgh, Britain-based medical device company, has purchased Barcelona, Spain -based Morpheus Medical, a developer of patient monitoring devices for the anesthesia and critical care markets, for an undisclosed amount.

Morpheus’s main product is the IoC-View,which measures levels of consciousness during general anesthesia, helping to avoid the risk of patients remaining conscious through a procedure.

The acquisition was “in line” with its “long-term strategic aim of developing a broader product offering for the critical care market,” and Morpheus’s area expertise complements the Aircraft’s offering, according to Aircraft Medical.

The Edinburgh firm’s chief product is its McGrath video laryngoscope, a hand-held device for a common medical procedure called tracheal intubation, which allows medics to artificially take control of a patient’s breathing during general anesthesia

The instrument was named after Matt McGrath, Aircraft Medical’s chief executive who founded the company in 2001 and also designed the device.
