Aidoc Names Former AMA President as Chief Medical Officer

Former American Medical Association (AMA) President Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., has joined Aidoc as its chief medical officer. 

Dr. Ehrenfeld concluded his term as AMA president in June 2024. His decision to work for Aidoc underscores the increasingly central role clinical artificial intelligence (AI) now plays in health system workflows. His hiring occurs in moment of strong momentum for the healthcare industry, as enterprise-wide clinical AI, a category Aidoc pioneered, is becoming the operational standard for health systems seeking to improve patient outcomes and physician experience. 

Dr. Ehrenfeld is considered a leading national voice on physician well-being and the responsible use of technology. “During my tenure at the AMA, my focus was on supporting physicians and strengthening the systems they work in,” he said. “It’s clear that Aidoc’s success to date has been rooted in building technology physicians trust. Dr. Ehrenfeld’s new position represents a continuation of his work as a physician advocate, shifting from national leadership to driving the next phase of innovation for AI already embedded in real-world care at scale with focus on safety, reliability, and clinical rigor.

That trajectory made it clear to me: leading the next chapter of healthcare requires a deep partnership with the radiology community.”

In his role, Dr. Ehrenfeld will support health systems as they transition from adopting individual point solutions toward a comprehensive clinical AI strategy.

Dr. Ehrenfeld brings a rare combination of frontline clinical experience and national leadership to Aidoc. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist and clinical informaticist with expertise in healthcare innovation and patient safety. Dr. Ehrenfeld’s research—which focuses on understanding the ways information technology can improve surgical safety and patient outcomes—has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Department of Defense, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, and the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research. He currently serves on the National Academy of Medicine’s Health Policy Fellowships and Leadership Programs Advisory Committee.

Dr. Ehrenfeld’s work has led to the publication of more than 275 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Medical Systems and has co-authored 22 clinical textbooks that have been translated into multiple languages. Dr. Ehrenfeld has received numerous awards for his research and is a recipient of several prestigious teaching awards.

Upon his 2023 inauguration, Dr. Ehrenfeld made AMA history as the first openly gay president of the organization. For the past two decades, he has been a nationally recognized advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals. In 2018, in recognition of his research contributions, he received the inaugural Sexual and Gender Minority Research Investigator Award from the NIH director.

Born in Wilmington, Del., Dr. Ehrenfeld is a graduate of Phillips Academy, Haverford College, the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, and the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed an internship in internal medicine, a residency in anesthesiology, and a research informatics fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Board-certified in both anesthesiology and clinical informatics, Dr. Ehrenfeld is a fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Medical Informatics Association.

He is a combat veteran who deployed to Afghanistan during both Operation Enduring Freedom and Resolute Support Mission. For his work in capturing and supporting the lives of LGBTQ+ people, Dr. Ehrenfeld was recognized in 2015 with a White House News Photographers Association award and, in 2016, with an Emmy nomination.
