Medical technology developer Abiomed Inc. is moving portions of its German manufacturing operation to its Massachusetts headquarters and a new facility in Ireland.

The moves are expected to lead to hiring in both locations.

Indeed, Abiomed has already added engineering positions at its Danvers, MA headquarters to handle the new work and more jobs will be created over time, company president and CEO Michael Minogue told the Boston Business Journal.

In addition, Abiomed, which makes products to aid heart patients, announced that it had signed a long-term lease for 33,000 square feet of space in a facility in Athone, Ireland. The site will house workers to build a disposable component supporting its Impella 2.5 Cardiac Assist Device. Production at the facility in Ireland should begin within 18 months. The plant will include 10,000 square feet of clean room space.

The Impella’s technology console will be manufactured in Danvers, where about 250 of the company’s 390 total employees reside. That work was previously performed at Abiomed’s manufacturing facility in Aachen, Germany. That facility will continue to operate, Abiomed said.

Abiomed anticipates significant demand for the Impella. The US Food and Drug Administration cleared the device for sale in June, and Abiomed plans to market it to 14,000 interventional cardiologists at more than 1,700 heart hospitals across the United States.
