Maplewood, MN-based 3M is creating a new unit, 3M Medical Diagnostics, to develop rapid-test products that would help hospitals quickly detect infectious diseases.

The new unit will focus on creating and commercializing diagnostic products that could help identify certain strains of the flu, Staphylococcus, or other pathogens.

The announcement comes two months after 3M sold its pharmaceutical business for $2.1 billion.

The new unit will fall under 3M’s health care operations, which has $3.2 billion in annual sales.

“3M Medical Diagnostics is a natural extension of our infection-prevention platform and enables us to offer hospitals a full spectrum of products that detect, prevent and treat infections in the hospital setting,” said Angela Dillow, 3M’s global business manager for the medical diagnostics business.
