MiniMed began U.S. launch of its MiniMed Flex system, its first app-controlled pump and the company’s smallest insulin pump to date.

The pump is launching with the Simplera Sync sensor, a disposable, all-in-one sensor with two-step insertion. A launch with Abbott’s Instinct sensor is planned for later this summer.

Roughly half the size of other MiniMed pumps, it’s the company’s most compact pump and still holds 300 units of insulin. The company said it’s engineered to fit into everyday life no matter what a person wants to wear.

The system is powered by the company’s most advanced SmartGuard algorithm, which includes Meal Detection technology that detects rapid rises in sensor glucose and delivers a correction dose for occasional missed meal boluses or underestimated carb counts. The system continuously adjust and autocorrects insulin delivery up to every five minutes based on real-time glucose readings from the Simplera Sync sensor.

Real-world results have shown 80% time in range (TIR) with recommended settings. Compatible with MiniMed’s Extended infusion set, users can wear it up to seven days and experience 96% fewer injections compared to traditional insulin therapy.

MiniMed Flex is cleared for people with type 1 diabetes aged seven and up, as well as adults 18 and older with insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes.

“For too long, people managing diabetes have had to choose between effective therapy and the freedom to just live their lives. MiniMed Flex changes that,” said Que Dallara, CEO of MiniMed. “It’s small enough to disappear, smart enough to handle the hard work, and now it’s in people’s hands. This is the MiniMed we’re becoming—faster, and more focused than ever on delivering on our Mission. Better days start now.”
